Lady Nepean
(1821-1895)
7 January 1862

Volume 5, page 304, sitting number 6710.

Born in about 1821 in Scotland, Isabella Geils was the only daughter of Colonel Andrew Geils of Dumbuck House, Old Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire.

On 27 April 1841 at Old Kilpatrick in Dunbartonshire she married Molyneux Hyde Nepean, eldest son of Sir Molyneux Hyde Nepean of Loders and Bothenhampton in the county of Dorset. The groom succeeded his father in 1856, becoming the third baronet.

He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the service of the 77th Foot and was later a Captain in the West York Militia.

In 1861 the couple were living at Stuckgowan, on the banks of Loch Lomond, near Arrochar in Dunbartonshire. In 1871 and 1891 they were at Sir Molyneux’s seat, Loders Court, in the village of Loders near Bridport in Dorset.

In March 1895 various newspapers reported on the death of Sir Molyneux Nepean. ‘Sir Molyneux Nepean of Loders Court, Bridport, died yesterday from pneumonia. Lady Nepean is also dangerously ill’ (Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette, 14 March 1895). A few days later, the Western Daily Press (18 March 1895), reported that ‘Lady Nepean died at Loders Court yesterday morning from pneumonia. Sir Molyneux Nepean, who died on Wednesday from the same complaint, was buried at Loders on Saturday. The deceased lady never knew of her husband’s death, she having been unconscious for several days.’

According to the registration of her death, she was 78 years old, which would mean she was born in 1817. However, five out of six censuses indicate a birth date in either 1821 or 1822.

Sir Molyneux left an estate valued at £1257. Lady Nepean's estate was valued at £7605.
