Captain Allan Shafto Adair
(1836-1902)

Born on 20 December 1836, at Bradford in Somerset, Allan Shafto Adair was the fourth son of Alexander Adair of Hetherton Park, Somerset. 

On 2 February 1855 he became an Ensign (by purchase) in the 13th (Prince Albert's) Regiment of Light Infantry. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 August 1855 and on 23 July 1863 he became a Captain. According to Hart's Army List (1867), 'Captain Adair served in the Indian campaign and was present at the relief of Azimghur (Medal).'

On 5 January 1864 at Pinner near Harrow in northwest London Captain Allan Shafto Adair of the 13th Light Infantry married Georgiana Sarah Turnbull, second daughter of John George Turnbull 'late of the Madras Civil Service' (Belfast Newsletter, 15 January 1864).

In 1901 he was a 'Bank Agent' living at Bank of England House in Plymouth with his wife Georgiana and their unmarried daughter Violet. Also present on the night of the census were four servants, including a footman.

Allan Shafto Adair died, aged 66, on 27 December 1902 at Plymouth and was buried in St Paul's Churchyard at Tongham in Surrey. According to a brief announcement of his death in the West Somerset Free Press (3 January 1903), 'The death occured on Saturday of Major Allan Shaft Adair, for many years manager of the Plymouth branch of the Bank of England. The deceased, who was 66 years of age, had been ill for some time, and his death was not unexpected.'

He left an estate valued at £25,294.
