Miss Evelina de Rothschild
(1839-1866)
Volume 1, page 259, sitting number 1215.
Born on 25 August 1839, her father was the banker and Member of Parliament Lionel Nathan Rothschild, who was the first openly unconverted Jew to sit in the House of Commons. Her mother was Charlotte von Rothschild, a member of the Naples branch of the family who was born in Frankfurt.
On 7 June 1865 Evelina married her second cousin Ferdinand James von Rothschild (1839–1898), a member of the Austrian branch of the family. Because of her parents' prominent position as one of the wealthiest and most influential families in England, guests at her wedding banquet and ball included Benjamin Disraeli, the ambassadors from Austria and France and Prince George, Duke of Cambridge.
Following a lengthy honeymoon in Europe, Evelina and her husband established a home at 143 Piccadilly in London near Evelina's parents.
Evelina von Rothschild died on 4 December 1866 after giving birth to a stillborn son. She was buried in the Rothschild Mausoleum at the Jewish Cemetery in West Ham.
