The photographer's backplate does not specify a location, still less an address, but Swan has a comprehensive entry in Palmquist's Pioneer Photographers from the Mississippi to the Continental Divide: A Biographical Dictionary, 1839-1865 (Stanford University Press, 2005). During the 1850s he operated as a daguerreian in various towns in Iowa but by the time this portrait was taken in the 1860s he was well established in Denmark, Iowa.
