The Honourable Miss Lucy Spencer-Churchill
(1832-1917)

Volume 1, page 5, sitting number 24.

The database at the National Portrait Gallery identifies the sitter as Lady Cornelia Henrietta Maria Spencer-Churchill, eldest daughter of the 7th Duke of Marlborough. However, since Lady Cornelia Spencer-Churchill was born in 1847, she would only have been 13 years old at the time the sitter in this portrait visited Silvy's studio.

The lady seen here is instead the Honourable Miss Lucy Caroline Spencer-Churchill, born at Ham in Surrey on 29 January 1832. Her father was Lord Charles Spencer-Churchill (1794-1840), second son of the 5th Duke of Marlborough.

She appears on the 1861 census visiting the banker and magistrate Herbert Barnard and his wife at 69 Portland Place, London.

On 22 January 1880 at St George's in Hanover Square she married Reverend John Fletcher Dixon-Stewart.

The Honourable Mrs Dixon-Stewart died on 28 September 1917.
