Miss Wilberforce Bird
(1837-1863)
12 October 1860
Volume 2, page 36, sitting number 1443.
Given the other portraits acquired at the same time, this is probably Miss Harriette Penelope Wilberforce Bird, youngest daughter of the colonial administrator William Wilberforce Bird and his wife Hannah Elizabeth (née Brown). Her parents were married at Benares in India in 1818.
Born in London on 3 June 1837, she appears on the 1861 census living with her widowed mother and her younger brother Francis at 22 Sussex Square, Bayswater.
On 5 February 1863 at Christ Church in Bayswater she married army officer George Peploe Brown of the Royal Artillery, son of George Francis Brown of the Bengal Civil Service. She died of 'brain fever' a few months later, aged only 25, on 10 May 1863 at Woolich in Kent. Her mother died of 'pleuro pneumonia' two days later at her home in Sussex Square, Bayswater.
Mrs Harriette Peploe Brown was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery on 16 May 1863.
