This is probably the Thomas Hammerton who appears on the 1861 census living at 112 Piccadilly, the home of his nephew, Thomas W. Cowell. Both men gave for their profession 'M.R.C.S. [Member of the Royal College of Surgeons] General Practice.' Aged 72 and a widower, Thomas Hammerton was born at Hipperholme near Halifax in Yorkshire in or about 1789.

His wife had died many years earlier. Her death was announced in the Evening Chronicle on 24 October 1835: 'On Thursday, the 22d instant, in Piccadilly, after a severe illness, Jane Caroline, wife of Thomas Hammerton, Esq., in the thirty-sixth year of her age.'

Thomas Hammerton died, aged 83, on 2 February 1872 at Carlton Lawn, Carlton Street, Cheltenham. He left effects valued at under £6000. A brief announcement in the Gloucester Journal (10 February 1872) described him as 'late of 112, Piccadilly.'
