Charles John Smith appears on the 1871 census, aged 67, living at 35 Eaton Square, London, with his wife, Frances, daughters Constance and Ella, and son, Charles, aged 25. He gave 'Landowner' as his profession and his place of birth as 'London.'

Charles John Smith died 2 December 1874, aged 70, at Clifton Hall in Derbyshire. His estate was valued at £45,000.
