William Mott, Esq.
(1815-1887)
31 January 1861

Volume 2, page 174, sitting number 1987.

Born at Lichfield in Staffordshire in or about 1815, William Mott appears on the 1851 census,  a 36-year-old magistrate living with his family at Wall House in Wall, Staffordshire.

He died, aged 72, at Wall on 26 May 1887. 'The remains of the late Mr William Mott, of Wall, were interred on Tuesday last. The deceased gentleman had been for upwards of fifty years J.P. and deputy lieutenant for the county of Stafford, and was, in fact one of the senior magistrates on the bench. He was the eldest son of the late Mr John Mott of the Close in this city, and had resided in Wall for a considerable period. Few faces are better known in Lichfield, and few were more welcome, in fact his death may be said to have snapped the last link of the chain which binds the present generation of our citizens with the past. Ever ready with a kind action and deservedly popular with all classes, his death leaves a void in our midst. Mr Mott had been ailing for some months past. During the severe weather experienced at Christmas time he had the misfortune to slip whilst out walking, and to sprain one of the tendons of the right knee. Jaundice supervened upon a week’s compulsory inactivity, and at his advanced age each disease was almost sure to lead to more serious complications. He rallied from time time, but eventually passed peacefully away during the early hours of Thursday week last. He was laid to rest in the picturesque little Churchyard of St Wall on Tuesday in Whitsun week' (Lichfield Mercury, 3 June 1887).

The abstract of his will describes him as 'formely of the Albany in the Parish of St James Westminster in the County of Middlesex and afterwards of Elmhurst Hall near Lichfield but late of Wall near Lichfield both in the County of Stafford.' He left effects valued at £2180.

His son, Edward Spencer Mott, was the writer and one-time racing tipster 'Nathaniel Gubbins.'
