Robert Henry Hurst was a barrister and the Member of Parliament for Horsham. Educated at Westminster and Trinity College, Cambridge, he was called to the bar, Middle Temple, in 1842. From 1862 he was the recorder of Hastings and Rye, and he also served as a Justice of the Peace and a Deputy-Lieutenant. From 1865 to 1874 and again from 1875 to 1876 he was the MP (Liberal) for Horsham. His addresses were Horsham Park, Sussex, and Barrington Grove, Burford (Who Was Who, 1897).

He died, aged 87, on 12 February 1905 at Horsham Park in Sussex. His estate was resworn at £153,468.
