Identified in the Silvy daybooks as 'Bryan Burrell Esq.,' an inked inscription on the album page identifies the sitter as 'Captain Burrell of Broome Park.'

Bryan Burrell of Broome Park in Northumberland was born on 23 June 1805. His parents were William Burrell of Broome Park and Eleonor née Forster. He died at Broome Park on 5 September 1881 and was buried in Bolton Chapel, Northumberland, a chapel of ease in the parish of Edlingham. His estate was valued at £57,498.

He appears on various censuses. On the 1861 census he is living at Broompark Hall, Abberwick, Northumberland, with his wife Frances, two sons, two daughters, and eleven servants. He described himself as a 'Landed Proprietor.' He can also be found on the 1871 census, now a widower, living at Broom Park [sic] with three of his children. He described himself as 'Landowner.' On the 1881 census he described himself as a 'Retired Colonel.'
