At the time of the 1861 census, Ernest Marsh Lloyd was a twenty-year-old Lieutentant in the Royal Engineers lodging in the house of a Dover cabinet maker. At St Mary's, Dover, on 20 August 1862 he married Rosa Harriette Davies, the nineteen-year-old daughter of Edward Pellew Davies, of the Royal College of Surgeons.

Ernest and Rosa Lloyd appear on the 1871 census, living at Clearmont Cottage, Wyke Regis, Dorset, with three children and one servant.

According to J.F. Kirk's A Supplement to Allibone's Critical Dictionary of English Literature (1891), Lieutenant-Colonel Ernest Marsh Lloyd, R.E. 'late professor of fortifications at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich; now assistant inspector-general of fortifications' was the author of Vauban, Montalambert, Carnot; Engineering Studies, with Portraits (London, 1886). According to the Saturday Review, these essays, reprinted from the Quarterly Review and military periodicals, were 'chiefly biographical, but, prefaced as they are by an introductory chapter - an expansion of part of the author's "Text Book of Fortification," the official work used at Woolwich - and concluded by an essay on modern forts, they cover very adequately the whole history of permanent fortifications.'

Mrs Rosa Lloyd died, aged 77, on 4 November 1920 at Glenhurst, Brighton Road, Sutton, Surrey. She left effects valued at £1838. Ernest Marsh Lloyds died, aged 81, at the same address on 11 January 1922, leaving effects valued at £3049.
