Volume 9, page 127, sitting number 11,504.
The Naval List published in June 1862 gives two Huttons serving in the Royal Navy. One is 1st Lieutenant William Hutton formerly of the Royal Marines and currently serving with the coast guard. The other, our man in this portrait, is Captain Frederick Hutton, who is listed as receiving his Good Service Pension.
According to Boase’s Modern English Biography (1892), Rear-Admiral Frederick Hutton was born in 1801 and entered the Navy on 28 January 1813. He became a Captain on 3 July 1844 and on 12 November 1846, as Captain aboard the store ship Tortoise, he was appointed Governor of Ascension Island. He appears to have held this position until 1852. On 1 April 1863 he was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral.
Rear-Admiral Frederick Hutton died at Tunbridge Wells on 6 March 1866. He left an estate valued at £4000.
