and Miss Maud Cartwright

Identified in the Silvy daybooks as 'Mrs Henry Cartwright and child,' an inked inscription in a period hand on the reverse of the mount identifies the sitters as 'Mrs Cartwright and Maud,' while another on the album page reads 'Mrs Cartwright née Jane Holbech.'

Maud Cartwright was born on 15 January 1857 and was christened at St Mark's, North Audley Street, Mayfair, on 27 February 1857.

On the night of the 1861 census, Mrs Cartwright was staying, with her husband, at the home of her brother-in-law in Tonbridge Wells. She gave her age as 40, so she was born in or about 1821.

On the same night, Maud was at a house called Little Kineton, at Kineton in Warwickshire, with her sister, two younger brothers and thirteen servants.

At the time the 1871 census, the family were living at Eyton Hall at Eyton in Northamptonshire.

According to the Times, Miss Maud Cartwright was formally presented at a Drawing Room held at Buckingham Palace on the afternoon of Friday 7 May 1875.

On 21 February 1889 she married Arthur Edmund Thursby, son of Arthur Harvey Thursby, at St Paul's Church, St Leonard's-On-Sea, Sussex.

Her father's will, proved on 18 September 1890, bequeathed to his daughter, Mrs Maud Thursby, the sum of £2500, in addition to the £8000 settled on her at the time of her marriage. Her husband, Major Arthur Edmund Thursby, of the 5th Royal Warwickshire Regiment, died during the Boer War, of enteric fever [typhoid] at Sutherland, Cape Colony, on 6 March 1902, at the age of 41. He left his wife with two sons and one daughter.

Mrs Maud Thursby 'of Hardwick-hill Byfield Warwickshire' died on 12 April 1918, leaving an estate valued at £10,724.
