Volume 3, page 342, sitting number 4051.
The boy on the left is John Robert Gladstone, later Sir John Gladstone. He is probably seen here with one of his sisters.
John Robert Gladstone was the son of Sir Thomas Gladstone, an older brother of the Liberal Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone. His mother was Louisa Gladstone (née Fellowes).
Like his father, he became Lord Lieutenant of Kincardineshire and was also a JP in that county. He was a Captain in the 1st Battalion of the Coldstream Guards and a Brigadier in the Royal Company of Archers. He succeeded his father as baronet on 20 March 1889. In 1898 he attended the state funeral of his uncle, William Ewart Gladstone.
Sir John Gladstone died on 25 June 1926, at the age of 74. He never married, so the title passed to his cousin, John Evelyn Gladstone.
The girl seen with him in this portrait is probably one of his six sisters. The likeliest candidate for a match is Constance Elizabeth Gladstone, born in 1850. She never married either. She died in 1922.
