Miss Annie Robertson was the daughter of the Scottish industrialist, mining engineer and prolific railway builder Henry Robertson (1816-1888), who twice served as the MP (Liberal) for Shrewsbury (1862-1865 and 1874-1885). He was also head of Brymbo Steelworks in Wrexham.
Baptised in Shrewsbury on 20 May 1854, Annie was 6 years old at the time of the 1861 census.
Her marriage was described in some detail in the Worcestershire Chronicle (11 December 1872): 'The marriage of Mr Alexander Tom Arthur Sheriff, M.A., only son of Mr A.C. Sherriff, M.P., of Craycombe, Worcestershire, with Miss Annie Robertson, daughter of Henry Robertson, Esq., formerly M.P. for Shrewsbury, was solemnized at the parish church of Llandderfel, a village about two miles from Bala, on Wednesday last [4 December 1872]. The bridal party arrived at the church shortly after eleven o'clock. [...] The bride's dress was white satin, trimmed with Brussels lace, flounces trimmed with wreaths of orange blossom and stephanotis, wreath and veil. Her bouquet was composed of stephanotis, lilies and orange blossom. The costumes of the bridesmaids were pale blue silk, trimmed with lemon colour. ' The article continues at some length and includes a list of the guests and the bride's 'costly and numerous' gifts. 'At four o'clock the newly-married couple left by special train for Leamington, en route for the Continent. [...] The hearty respect which is entertained for the family of the bride in the county caused the event to evoke demonstrations of a very extensive character. At Llandderfel and Llandiello, large sums of money were subscribed, and at each place there were public dinners. At Llandiello and Llangollen the special train conveying the bride and bridegroom made a brief stay, and at these places congratulatory addresses were presented.'
Alexander Tom Arthur Sherriff, 'late of Crogen in the Parish of Llanderfel in the County of Merioneth,' died, aged 32, on 8 February 1880 at 13 Lancaster Gate, London. He left an estate valued at £7000.
Mrs Annie Sheriff died, aged only 35, on 24 July 1889 at Eryl Arran in the County of Merioneth. Her estate was valued at £21,097.
