Lily's real name was Elizabeth and she was the daughter of the Scottish industrialist, mining engineer and prolific railway builder Henry Robertson (1816-1888), who twice served as the MP (Liberal) for Shrewsbury (1862-1865 and 1874-1885). Her mother was Elizabeth Robertson née Dean, daughter of solicitor William Dean.
Born in Shrewsbury, she was 9 at the time of the 1861 census.
Her marriage was announced in the Dundee Evening Telegraph on 3 May 1883: 'At Christ Church, Lancaster Gate, on the 28th April, [...] Lieut.-Colonel George Henry Wilson, late The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), to Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Henry Robertson, Esq., M.P., of Palé, Corwen, and 13 Lancaster Gate.'
