Edward Hovell Thurlow
(1839-1925)
7 March 1862
Volume 6, page 81, sitting number 7195.
[In the daybooks and on the Silvy database at the National Portrait Gallery, the sitter is identified as Edward Howell Thurton. However, the same sitter also appears in civilian clothes in an earlier portrait (volume 1, page 185, sitting number 944), only this time his name is given as 'Thurlon Esq.' in the daybooks, and as 'E. H. Thurlow' on the database. An inscription on the album page identified him as 'Edward Thurlow.' This is therefore Edward Hovell Thurlow of the Royal Artillery (Depôt Brigade).]
The following is an extract from Sussex in the 20th Century (published 1910): 'Thurlow, Major Edward Hovell Thurlow (1839-1925), of Buckham Hill House, Uckfield. Son of the Rev. Chancellor Thurlow [who also appears in the daybooks], born Beverley, Yorks. 24 January 1839; educated at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. Late of the Royal Artilley. Married in 1875 Georgina Violet, daughter of George Dodd, MP for Maidstone, and has issue Editha Accituna, wife of Captain R.C. Griffin, late Royal Sussex Regiment. Club: Army and Navy.'
