Colonel William Borthwick, formerly of the Indian Army, appears on the 1861 census, living with his wife, Maria, two almost-adult children and four servants at 24 Kensington Park Gardens, London. He gave Scotland as his place of birth.
According to an Internet source, his wife's maiden name was Maria Anne Maxwell. They were married on 8 December 1841 at St Cuthbert's in Edinburgh.
Colonel Borthwick died, aged 80, on either 24 or 26 July 1867 at Longwood, Langholm, Dumfriesshire. The cause of death was 'disease of [the] prostate gland and paralisis of [the] bladder.’
