Ensign Clifford Fortescue Borrer

Ensign Clifford Fortescue Borrer served with the 60th (The King's Royal Rifle Corps). 

On 28 June 1864 he was promoted Lieutenant (by purchase). On 19 December 1865 he was appointed Instructor of Musketry. His retirement from the Army was announced on 2 October 1866, though he was subsequently Adjutant (1867) and then Captain (1871) in the 1st Sussex Rifle Volunteer Corps.

He appears on the 1881 census, a 40-year-old retired army officer of the 60th Rifles, living at 78 Warrior Square in Hastings, Sussex. He was born at Hurstpierpoint, Sussex, and at the time of the census, was living with his wife Christine (age 36) and their two daughters, Lily (age 12, born at Dover) and Marguerite (age 10, born at Reigate).

His marriage certificate shows that Clifford Fortescue Borrer and Christine Sophia Freshfield were married on 25 October 1866 at St Nicholas's Church in Brighton. The ceremony was performed by the groom's father, Carey Hampton Borrer, the Rector of Hurstpierpoint.

Captain Borrer died, aged 43, on 29 August 1884 at Clayton Wickham, Hurstpierpoint. He left a personal estate valued at £1701.
