Mrs Francis Goolden

[Identified as 'Mrs Francis Goolden' in the Silvy daybooks, this is the second wife of surgeon Francis Goolden.]

Born on 1 March 1825 and baptised on 20 May 1825 at St Dunstan-in-the-West in the City of London, Emma Clifford was the daughter of William and Mary Maria Clifford. 

On 24 July 1855, at St Mary's in Lambeth, Francis Goolden of Maidenhead married, secondly, 'Emma, third daughter of William Clifford, Esq., of Clapham-rise' (Reading Mercury, 28 July 1855).

The couple appear on the 1861 census living on the High Street in Bray, Berkshire. Francis gave 'Surgeon' as his profession. The household also included a 'medical assistant' and a 'surgery boy,' as well as a groom and two other servants. 

At the time of the 1891 census they were living with a niece and four servants at 'The Wilderness,' Cookham, Berkshire. 

Early the following year Francis Goolden's death was announced in a local newspaper. 'We regret to record the death of Mr Francis Goolden, which occurred at his residence, "The Wilderness," Market-street, on Monday morning. The deceased gentleman, who was 72 years of age, was for many years the head of a firm [of] surgeons, now the practice of Messrs. Playne, Moore and Mason, and had for some years been on the Commission of the Peace for the borough' (Reading Mercury, 20 February 1892). He left an estate valued at £30,175. 

Mrs Emma Goolden died, aged 86, on 16 March 1911 at 'The Wilderness.' She left an estate valued at £2766.
