John William Allen
(1795-1878)
22 June 1861
Volume 4, page 112, sitting number 4517.
[The sitter is identified as 'John M. Allen' in the Silvy daybooks; I suspect that this a clerical error and that the sitter is in fact the attorney John William Allen.]
Born on 11 October 1795 in the City of Westminster, John William Allen was baptised at St Anne's in Soho on 10 November 1795. His parents were Emanuel Allen and Cassandra née Everitt.
On 11 October 1824 he married Amelia Briggs at St John's Church in Hampstead. Their marriage produced three sons and three daughters.
John William Allen appears on the 1851 and 1861 censuses living at 9 Cavendish Road in St John's Wood. On both censuses he gave 'Attorney-at-Law' as his profession. In 1871, still at the same address, he described himself as a 'Solicitor.'
John William Allen 'late of 17 Carlisle-street Soho and 9 Cavendish-road St John's Wood' died at the latter address on 22 December 1878. He was 83 years old. His estate was valued at £100,000.
[From an album probably compiled by a member of the Hoare family.]
