The Honourable Francis Villiers
(1852-1925)
[The sitter was originally identified on the album page in ink as ‘F. Caldedon’ but a later hand has scored through ‘Caledon’ in pencil and substituted ‘Villiers.’ Given the context of the album and the apparent age of the sitter, this is possibly the Honourable Francis Hyde Villiers, son of the English statesman Lord Clarendon, and younger brother of Lady Skelmersdale, later the Countess of Lathom.
All the original inked inscriptions identifying the sitters were added long after the album was compiled. For example, Lord and Lady Skelmersdale, photographed by Silvy in 1860, are identified as Lord and Lady Lathom, although Lord Skelmersdale wasn’t created Earl of Lathom until 1880. Similarly, all the daughters of the Earl of Craven are identified by their married names, although most of them were still unmarried when they visited Silvy’s studio.]
