The Honourable Walter Alexander
(1849-1934)
Volume 1, page 248, sitting number 1170.
[Identified in the Silvy daybooks as the 'Child of Lady Clarendon',' the sitter was identified on the album page as 'Walter Alexander.' Given that the album contained many other portraits of the Alexander and Grimston families, the album inscription is likely, I think, to be the correct one. Furthermore, of the three other sitters on the same page in the Silvy daybooks, at least one is demonstrably misidentified.]
The Honourable Walter Philip Alexander was born on 9 February 1849, the second son of James Du Pre Alexander, 3rd Earl of Caledon and his wife Lady Jane née Grimston. He entered the Army and gained the rank of Colonel in the service of the 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys). He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1900.
On 13 April 1882 he married his cousin, Margaret Katherine Grimston, daughter of the Reverend and Honourable Francis Sylvester Grimston. The couple had two children.
Colonel the Honourable Walter Alexander died on 30 October 1934.
